There were reports of the death at the front of the Crimean citizen, civil activist and former political prisoner of the Kremlin, Hennadiy Afanasyev. It was reported that Afanasyev died defending Ukraine on 21st December and this was confirmed by his wife Ludmila Afanasyev on Radio Liberty Crimea.
In 2014, he spoke out against the annexation of Crimea, for which the FSB accused him of preparing terrorist attacks. Afanasyev was arrested in the Russian Federation and in 2016 he was returned to Ukraine as part of a prisoner exchange.
Following the invasion of Ukraine, he defended Kyiv airport. Later, as part of the 130th battalion of the TrO 241st brigade, he participated in battles in Kharkiv and Donetsk Oblasts. However, he died in the battle of Bilogorivka in Luhansk. Hennadiy is survived by his young daughter and his wife.
