Reading a 1963 article on rum that features some frankly hilarious cocktail recipes. They make heavy use of electric blenders. There is much hollowing out of fruit, blending the flesh with rum, refilling the fruit and serving on a bed of ice. If not that then it's all glacé cherries on cocktail sticks stuck down the end of your straw.
