Once upon a time I made a painting titled Cosmic Serpents (sold.) It was inspired by folklore about Earth and Sky serpents that gave birth to all creation. I made another design based on that painting which is now a new artwork titled “Cosmic Serpents Kaliedoscope Tapestry.”

Russels adder (Daboia russelii)

Het woord adder komt van het Middelnederlandse nater, een woord dat in verschillende vormen in meerdere Germaanse talen voorkwam. Het is afgeleid van het Latijnse natrix (de wetenschappelijke naam van de ringslang is Natrix natrix), afgeleid van het werkwoord natare ('zwemmen'). Hoewel de adder geen typische waterslang is zoals de ringslag, is hij wel degelijk een uitstekende zwemmer.

Daboia is de naam voor deze slang in het Singalees, een taal die op Sri Lanka wordt gesproken.

Russells en russelii is een eerbetoon aan de onderzoeker Patrick Russell, die de slang (en vele andere Indiase slangen) voor het eerst beschreef.

Russells adder komt voor op het Indiase subcontinent en geldt als een van de vier grote slangen van India.

De beet is pijnlijk en zeer giftig. Een volwassen adder kan met gemak een voor mensen dodelijke hoeveelheid gif injecteren.

De wetenschappelijke naam (russelii)is eigenlijk een spelfout, aangezien de naam Russell met dubbel-L is.
