Imagine there's some shift in the #internet #markets, such that #servers #Mastodon and other #Fediverse programs cannot afford to keep going without mandatory #financial #contributions from their users. (I don't think this will ever happen, it's just a #hypothetical)
What is the maximum amount of #money you would be willing to #pay / #donate to keep your #server / #instance running?
What #content would you most want to keep interacting with? #Friends, #art, #science, #news, #politics, #AI, #tech, #VideoGames, #streaming, #LGBTQ, #furry, or something else? What cause would most entice you? #OpenSource, #NonProfit, #Democracy, #Freedom, or just non-#toxic #SocialMedia?
Please respond to and #boost this #poll, and let me know your thoughts in the #replies! (Sorry for #hashtag #spam, trying to maximize #reach for #diversity and volume of #responses)

@fediverse
I still wonder who added TEN THOUSAND #fediverse #servers and no users at the beginning of 2023.
Does anyone have an answer?
Only 24 hours notice. That's incredibly brutal. Wow.

Yikes, a report on the outage list says that Dedipath, a big hosting provider, is going out of business.
Just spoke to a friend in Dallas in the hosting industry and he confirmed it.

@destrow managed to find a pretty sweet deal on a couple server chassis, so now I get to have the fun of configuring #Proxmox onto them to add to our Veracious Network cluster. I'm still undecided on how much memory I want to load up, (they support 3TB each), but right now I'm contemplating the storage.
We picked up some cheap 1TB drives from #Microcenter which I'll be loading in (configured in 2x raid-5, or raid-10.... whatever it's called), but was curious about what other folks in the community do for your #SMB / #Homelab hypervisors.
Do you add all the storage into the system partition to have one giant '/' mount, or do you add a second storage pool of dedicated disks separate from the OS?
Historically I've kept them separate, but Proxmox sets up a 'Local' pool on the system partition by default, which got me wondering if I'm just making it unnecessarily complicated. (Though I still think having a separate data pool makes disaster recovery easier.)

Can someone give me a link to how I can do this?
Surely I can not use my own log in info on another server?

I still #wonder how #opera s #servers can #handle all that #data #influx.
I mean - sure.
If you #disable #images that can be done #clientside
But #compression ?
That requires #communicating with their server that replies with the page instead
Also #TheInternet ā¢ now thinks I'm from #Netherland

Leaked document offers glimpse at negotiations between #TikTok & US government. In a draft agreement obtained by Forbes, TikTok reportedly offered the government a number of #concessions to avoid a #ban in the US.That included the ability for the #DOJ and #DOD to examine TikTokās US #servers, prevent changes to its #privacy policies, and even āveto the hiringā of anyone on its data security team. I would really like a site that aggregates all performance benchmarks for all CPUs/GPUs/PC Parts (not just consumer or business) and puts them all in a graph with price and performance.
Shopping for used 1U servers that are faster than my current Ryzen 9 tower "server" but also priced reasonably is such a pain.
trying to figure out if a Xeon XXXX is faster or slower or more power hungry is stupidly annoying.
Cryptic model numbers suck.

So who here is using @njalla? I'm considering migrating one of my #Linode #servers over. Njalla have been on my radar for a few years but not yet tried them. I did always enjoy reading their responses to takedown demands etc. It seems their location and #privacy principles would be worth the slightly higher costs for my needs (shared CPU, 2-4GB RAM). I'd be interested to hear about people's experience with them - or maybe another service you'd recommend! š

If one's building a service, it is a good idea to never collect PII nor any other sensitive information.
No one reasonably expects one to go to prison for one's users, but few will forgive handing over their sensitive data to LEO.
The simple solution to that apparent dilemma is to simply never collect such data in the first place and to do sensitive computation (such as key-generation and message encryption) exclusively client-side.
In Pursuit of a Superior Server: Oxide Computer Ships Its First Rack. By David Cassel - The New Stack https://thenewstack.io/in-pursuit-of-a-superior-server-oxide-computer-ships-its-first-rack/
