Humanity Will Out-Communicate all Life on Earth Within 90 Years

All organisms communicate information with their cells using signaling molecules. Add up all these communications, and it's the equivalent of 10^24 bits per second, which is an incomprehensibly large amount. Humanity's digital communication only amounts to 10^15 bits per second, nine orders of magnitude less. However, humanity's information transmission is growing exponentially, and according to a new study, it should catch up within 90 years. These estimates could help astronomers search for technological civilizations more advanced than us.

Is Anyone Planning for Diplomacy with an Extraterrestrial Civilization?

We lack scientific evidence of life beyond Earth, but the search is on. What if we do discover signals from an advanced civilization, or they send their probes to Earth? Is anyone planning Earth's response? According to a new paper on "Interstellar Diplomacy," there's no planning between nations for the aftermath of first detection and suggests what we could do to prepare. Should we respond, and what information should be shared with the public? The paper even suggests a first treaty we could propose to another civilization.

Are we visible to advanced alien civilizations?

We considered the question of how our artificial constructions are visible to advanced extraterrestrial civilizations. Taking the universality of the laws of physics, we found that the maximum distance where the detection is possible is of the order of 3000 ly and under certain conditions Type-II advanced alien societies might be able to resolve this problem

Some great #SETI talks at the #breakthroughinstitute Breakthrough Discuss 2023. Mind-blowing to hear of a mission proposal to survey the whole #lunar surface to sub-metre precision to look for evidence of #technosignatures (alien artefacts). Onboard #MachineLearning would be used to work out what bits of the surface are "out of the ordinary". Tests using existing lower resolution data are already able to successfully identify the #Apollo lunar landing sites, without any prior training. Amazing!
