Rue de Fouillac, Cahors, . . Pimped this one a bit, but not much. You can tell how much by the blue colour of the street name sign. Gloriously rich, warm colours of the medieval quarter. I believe Fouillac was a Abbé, who was commissioned to study the lives of the antique and early medieval founder saints associated with the Diocese of Cahors.

Why did Alice Thornton's uncle die suddenly in autumn 1647? According to Thornton, it was because he gorged on melons grown at his South Yorkshire estates. Jo Edge examines why melons were considered so desirable - and yet so dangerous - in the early modern period. historyworkshop.org.uk/food/fo

in 1644, Alice Thornton's sister, Katherine Danby, gave birth to her 15th child at Middleham Castle while her husband was a fugitive in the civil war. Alice, on horseback, nearly drowned in the river en route: 'the poor mare drew up her forefeet & I perceived she did swim' (Book1). See further thornton.kdl.kcl.ac.uk/posts/b

Want to know more about the two Alice Thornton (1626-1707) manuscripts which are now at the British Library? I've written a post for their Untold Lives series on them, their dating and possible reasons for composition, complete with some lovely manuscript images. Have a look: blogs.bl.uk/untoldlives/2023/0

It is the nearly the and like many we're shamelessly using it to promote something else: the Alice Thornton Books project! I've blogged about Thornton's account of the coronation of Charles II. Spoiler: it made less of an impact on Yorkshire-based Thornton than on London-based Pepys.
