What happened to "stop the presses"?
Just when I was preparing to enjoy a cup of coffee and read about the adventures of Georgia inmate P01135809, here's what I find on the front pages of the New York Times and San Francisco Chronicle this morning.
My Mom used to say, "now that's a kick in the pants".

Words that should never be used by any government or corporate representative:
"Nobody saw this coming".
Regarding the tragic Lahaina fire, a quote from a Maui government official in a #SFChronicle article today, "Officials may have misjudged fire danger".
In fact, there was a warning. The Hawaii Wildfire Management Organization raised wildfire concerns on Maui in a 2014 report.
When are we going to learn to listen to warnings and disregard the cost and effort involved in addressing the danger? Sadly, we humans all to often demonstrate that we are not the brightest species on this fragile planet.

New NY Times California Bureau Chief, Heather Knight (formerly a reporter for the SF Chronicle) says in her final Chron column today:
“While we all know San Francisco has major problems, I’m staying put in this gorgeous, flawed and fascinating city. I wouldn’t trade its creative people, its top-notch food, its perfect weather, its stunning beauty, its independent bookstores, its drag queens, its world-class parks or its colorful historic streetcars for anything.”
I agree with her!

Loving the journalism from #sfchronicle on the drug markets in the Tenderloin. Reminds me of Vice, where they aren't afraid to get a little dirty.

https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sfnext-fixing-our-city/id1625728875 I haven’t been a traditional fan of Aaron Peskin, but, he does strike the right tone here in the need for not letting factionalism stand in the way of solutions in this city, and also the need to break down silos between city/county departments. I am very happy for him that he got his previous drinking (and associated behavior issues) under control. I know that is not an easy road to go down. #SFPolitics #AaronPeskin #Podcast #SFNext #SFChronicle

Corporate Welfare, yet another example.
Found in "Vegas stadium deal stalls in Legislature", #SFChronicle today. The Nevada legislature failed to vote on a bill that would allocate "up to $380 million in public funds" for a new stadium in Las Vegas for the current Oakland A's. The deal is far from dead. The governor could call a special session to take up the bill.
Corporate Welfare highlights:
- $180 million tax credits from the state.
- $120 million bonds issued by the county.
- $25 million in infrastructure costs paid by the county.
- Ballpark site exempt from property taxes for 30 years.

Soleil Ho of the San Francisco Chronicle just published a story about attending a secretive anti-trans meeting held in San Francisco.
Spoiler alert: she went home and threw up.

Another example of a major newspaper resorting to clickbait headlines: "Exclusive: One of S.F.’s biggest companies is vacating its huge downtown HQ — but not because of remote work"
Saved you a click: It's Visa.
Don't forget the #SFChronicle as in today "This neighborhood's residents are unhappiest with SF government".
I wonder if they know that modeling editorial policy on the practices of clickbait farms lowers their journalism to the gutter?
Artist: a side of Joan Baez I had not known about. Today in the San Francisco Chronicle.

Under the category of "Of Course"
#Tornadoes Possible on the #MontereyBay Coast, #SFChronicle, today,
"San Francisco Chronicle Meteorologist Gerry Díaz said cities and towns along Highway 1 in San Mateo and Santa Cruz counties could see thunderstorms capable of producing small hail and gusts of 35 mph that could form into tornadoes of 100 yards in length, lasting a few minutes.
'The areas with the highest risk of seeing brief tornadoes are cities right along Highway 1 in Monterey Bay, including Capitola, Santa Cruz, Aptos and Davenport. Other parts of the coast will also have a brief chance for tornadoes.'”

"If (Washington) had a slogan, or motto, it would be something like this: Solving yesterday's problems tomorrow - maybe. And part of what animates my running for the Senate is dissatisfaction with that. We need to be solving tomorrow's problems today", #SFChronicle.
I'm far from making my choice for the next #CA #Senator, but I like Katie Porter and I like that quote.

Silicon Valley Bank collapses, worldwide financial markets are imploding, and the SF Chronicle (paper of record for the Bay Area) leads with a story on its impact on the wine industry? Really?
I love my hometown paper but feeling a little sour grapes here.

Why newspapers fail, no. 34234: The SF Chronicle prepared, printed, and mailed a print subscription offer to my home address. When I followed up, they said my home address was out of their delivery area.
I think most people who love the outdoors, especially those with experience of California's Bay Area, know the work of #SFChronicle writer Tom Stienstra.
Today, the Chronicle published a different kind of Stienstra adventure tale: how he fought and survived cancer. This is great reporting and a moving story.

I'm glad to see Soleil Ho write & the @sfchronicle publish a piece examining the NY Times recent history of transphobic articles. I do not want to see the letter dismissed as just a bunch of activists. Trans rights need mainstream support, and that means major media outlets like the Chronicle taking transphobia seriously.

Again, the @sfchronicle has a news report that is woefully inadequate:
https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/sf-nonprofit-uchs-westbrook-17776971.php
Who filed this lawsuit? What does it say was funded that shouldn't have been? What does it say wasn't funded? How was the money diverted? What is the text of the lawsuit? Even as just stenography it's bad journalism.
Why bother even reporting just this much?

The other day I accidentally texted a pal that a meal I made would pair with a “dryer”Gerwertztraminer. As a liberal arts person I was embarrassed. So I wanted to thank #SFChronicle @sfchronicle for making me feel better by printing: “The FBI’s San Francisco office said the agency was seeking the public’s insistence in identifying the man…” We are all human. Or maybe policing in SF has gotten that bad we need to insist crimes be investigated? What say @heatherknight ?
In the context of reproductive health, this is an appalling statistic: “1 in 7 patients in the U.S. [are] being cared for in a Catholic hospital.”
