Here is part 2 of the mini-series on special shakuhachi techniques: komibuki (コミぶき) or ‘pulsating breath’. Komibuki was developed by the samurai of Hirosaki castle and is now a distinguishing features of the Kinpu ryu. In the KSK we are quite free on how to do it though.

Hi everybody! We are developing 3d-printed #shakuhachi #尺八 and other wind instruments. The doors aren't quite open for business yet; we're working on getting everything as right as possible first.
Sakura Sakura, one of the most famous Japanese songs, which dates back to at least the Meiji era. This is my own arrangement played on shinobue with some shakuhachi support for the last verse. The video footage was shot in the Edinburgh Meadows during ‘haar’, a dense fog coming in from the North Sea.

This is a clip from Kakizakai sensei’s concert in Edinburgh in March 2023. The piece is ‘Shika no tone’ (鹿の遠音). I’m playing the second part.
Recorded on 25 March 2023 at the Cornerstone Centre in St John’s Church, Edinburgh.

Thanks to all who liked/boosted the original post- I've uploaded the STL's and original blend files to https://www.printables.com/model/463033-shakuhachi-in-2-or-4-parts-with-tapered-bore along with some more photos of the build process and (nearly) final instrument... It plays now although not nearly as smoothly as the original PVC pipe one I'd made years ago (sked-40, named after the type of pipe used in construction :D) It took a _lot_ of trial and error getting that one to play nicely enough so I think this will be similar... #3dprinting #shakuhachi

A series is only a series if it is being continued. So, here’s photo № 3, featuring some of my woodwind instruments. From left to right:
· a Renaissance cornamuse (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cornamuse),
· a contemporary tenor recorder,
· a B♭ clarinet,
· a Japanese shakuhachi (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shakuhachi),
· a Renaissance soprano recorder (model name “Praetorius”).
You can hear the cornamuse in my song “The Light”, doubled with a Terje-Rypdal-like electric guitar: https://babumenos.bandcamp.com/track/the-light
I played a few notes on the shakuhachi in the intro of “What Isn’t There”: https://babumenos.bandcamp.com/track/what-isn-t-there

“A Heavy Shower” by Hozan Yamamoto (1971)
🌧️ More rain today. So enjoying a cup of ☕️ and a weather appropriate track for #SundayJazz
This album often gets name checked when discussing #JapaneseJazz and with good reason. It’s a wonderful blend of American jazz with Japanese composition and instrumentation, notably Hozan Yamamoto on the Japanese #shakuhachi an end-blown flute made from bamboo.
Wholly unique, it’s a record worth hearing.

Für mich und M total begeisternd. Am geplanten Ende stand der ganze Saal und klatschte. Die Künstler haben dann noch fast ne halbe Stunde Zugabe gespielt und tanzten hinter …

Stunningly beautiful #AlbumOfTheWeek by Riley Lee, master of the #Shakuhachi. He has released many albums both deeply traditional and crossover over the years. This one, from 2022, stands out for me because the spirituality of Hildegard von Bingen resonates with me on a very personal level. Thank you, #RileyLee !
