The submission for the 52Frames.com weekly challenge of shallow depth of field. This one is OK because the bird is not in focus, so it took working with the contrast to give the illusion of detail, but it was the most interesting shot this week and happy with the outcome

More backyard birding looking for a shallow depth of field opportunity for the 52Frame.com challenge this week. It amazes me how quick these birds are to navigate and air brake before running into stuff. From this position in flight to mowing on some birdseed is literally hundredths if not thousandths of a second.

I took a few shots of this bird on a wall and his/her feathers caught the wind.
I turned around and looked at all the cars shooting in a machine gun like pace heading to their destinations.
When you can, take a breath and take a walk and look for the little things. Like a bird on a wall.

This weeks’ challenge at 52Frames.com is Shallow Depth of Field. The sub-challenge for me is to find the “sweet spot” on a particular lens for sharpness and clarity. Using the Canon EF 24-105 f/4L I found that f/5.6 gave really great sharpness in the center and at 1/500 of a second gave a decent blurred background (shallow depth of field).

Shallow depth of field is my jam. Every few years I kind of rediscover this, even though I've written about it a dozen times and even wrote a chapter on it in my book.
There have been times when I get in a funk with photography, and the cure for me invariably is to throw the f-stop wide open and let the bokeh take over.
