Congratulations to Eva Nogales, a senior faculty scientist in our Molecular Biophysics and Integrated Bioimaging Division on being awarded the 2023 Shaw Prize in Life Science and Medicine!
Nogales was recognized for pioneering structural biology techniques that enabled visualization of the protein machines responsible for gene transcription at the level of individual atoms.

The #ShawPrize in Astronomy 2023 is awarded in equal shares to Matthew Bailes, Duncan Lorimer and Maura McLaughlin for the discovery of fast radio bursts (FRBs): https://www.shawprize.org/prizes-and-laureates/astronomy/2023/press-release - although the nature of #FRBs remains unknown, they are almost certainly associated with neutron stars. FRBs have the potential to provide a unique probe of physics in extreme conditions and of the distribution of matter in the universe.
Congratulations to Vladimir Gershonovich Drinfeld https://zbmath.org/authors/drinfeld.vladimir and Shing-Tung Yau for being awarded the 2023 #ShawPrize in Mathematical Sciences!

The Fermat’s Last Theorem was one of the most famous unproven conjectures in mathematics for centuries until 1994 when Sir Andrew John Wiles completed his long & difficult proof, which uses powerful mathematical ideas & insights developed in the 19th & 20th centuries.
