Adams: The second strategy that they see at UF is that there was a $30 million investment in a Hamilton Center which should be about civics education. The new Director is from the LBJ Center in Texas. They’ve hired a slew of historians without any input from the UF History Department. They are hiring high intellectual historians. The Hamilton Center is already talking about being a separate college for Civic Engagement majors. Parallel Institutions is likely the future. #SHEAR 2023 #S39

(Which reminds me: when I organized the 2019 @SHARPorg conference--last big traditional one, pre-pandemic, of course--we were sensitive to the fact that #SHEAR / @SHEARites would be meeting around the same time on the east coast and at least hoped some people might be able to take part in both. @canadaehx I've heard that it was an engineering error, that a junior engineer designed some falsework using I-girders, and he calculated the shear resistance including the area of the flanges, when essentially only the web takes shear. No one caught the error.
