What a boat trip yesterday from #Brixham, #Devon. Skipper Dave on 'Kelly's Hero' did us proud; the wildlife was phenomenal - Great, Manx, Sooty and Balearic #Shearwater; Great, Arctic and Pomarine #Skua; Storm Petrel; Short-beaked Common #Dolphin; Harbour Porpoise; Grey Seal amongst all the 'usual' Gull species.

So, what did we find? Well, in young #seabirds, body mass influences the likelihood of survival in the critical period between nest departure & recruitment to the breeding population. For this study, we measured #shearwater chicks to determine how body condition changed over 13 years (an incredible long-term dataset!).
During 2010–2022, we found chick body mass & 3 measures of size (eg. wing length) declined by up to 0.23 mm/yr with body mass declining by 16 g/yr 📏📉😢
In the 1st photo, a healthy chick is shown on the LEFT while an undersized chick which we more commonly observed is shown on the RIGHT.
Overall, the number of chicks fledging (leaving the nest) at <400 g has increased sharply in recent years (see photo 2), meaning significant numbers of birds are unlikely to survive after departing the island

The most Rook-ian Meiburg has sounded in years. Those who find this album as "plodding" or "frustrating" likely weren't old enough at the time to comprehend just how brilliant the post-Will Sheff era was, from Palo Santo to Animal Joy. Or, maybe their critical touchstones extend only as far as Mark Hollis, so a Kevin-Krebs-meets-Mid-Air-Paul-Buchanan stunner like "Milkweed" is described as mid-album filler. Shame.

My Shearwater Petrel 2 uses VPM+GF (Varying Permiability Model + Gradient Facor)
My Suunto EON Steel uses Suunto's Fused RGBM (Reduced Gradient Bubble Model)
My Garmin Descent Mk2 uses Buhlman algorithm.
You might ask how i reconcile all three when they give different dive plans... simple.. I just use the deepest ceiling availible to me at the time and never violate any of them. Makes for an ultra conservative dive, as I set all of them with high conservatism, but I like that.
