Some years ago I built this sweet little 4w valve amp, based on a #Fender #5F1 circuit. This weekend I gave it 3 coats of shellac, to get that classic Fender tweed vibe. I was so happy with the results that I got out the #Fuji camera, put on a vintage Soviet #Helios lens and took a few sun dappled shots. I now envy the relicing team at Fender, who I imagine sit around smoking, drinking coffee and inhaling the rich walnut aroma of turpentine and #shellac all day.

This took way longer than I thought, but the box I was making with #handtools is finally done. Tried using #shellac for the first time, completely messed up and had to re-finish the lid as you can clearly see, but overall pretty happy with how it looks 😊

The most expensive part of "fine" woodworking is not the material, but the labor for the finishing.
A good #shellac work (French polish) requires HUNDREDS of hours.
Even if you give the ébéniste 10 $/hr (less than flipping burgers), 100 hrs are always over $1000.
Can people afford it, to have a nice table?
Or people will turn toward formica with a fancy photo of wood printed on it, which just "looks like" expensive?

Or singing and/or dancing as I listened. My room with bookshelves that held not just books but music recordings.

The first LP I bought with my own money was Nilsson's "The Point".
My first stereo console was a gift. My current stereo console (unfortunately in storage) is a 1966 KLH/Garrard that was a gift to my dad upon his graduation.
