I was looking around last night for something interesting to drink and noticed this "Jing Mai 2004" (raw puerh) from Farmer Leaf. I don't know any details about this tea beyond that it seems to have been included with another order as a bonus (I think maybe after one of my orders disappeared in transit). Farmer Leaf's first incarnation didn't exist until 2011, so it can't really be a 'Farmer Leaf" tea. However, William's in-laws were in the tea business in Jing Mai prior to 2011, so perhaps a find in the family warehouse. Fairly strong storage character, mild bitterness, and soft tea flavor would be how I would describe the flavor. Energy is chest centered, clean, and relaxing.

Xizihao Daughter "Oddly Confused" 2016 Raw Puerh Tea. Xizihao Daughter is a Taiwan based tea supplier who (mostly) specializes in puerh. Artistic labels, unusual names, mysterious origins, fairly expensive teas, quasi luxury trappings. (Sound familiar?) I picked up a sampler of some of their young-middle aged puerh. "Oddly Confused" is good now and I can kind of see where it is going. I bet it will be really good in a few years once it completely settles in to it's flavors, but it isn't there yet.

2016 "Beneath an Emerald Sea" raw puerh blend from Crimson Lotus teas. Received via tea trade. Small leaves and pieces, keeping the steeps short. Floral and herbaceous, very low bitterness. Some aged character showing up in the early steeps. Clean energy. Another enjoyable young puerh from this producer.

Low Rider 2019 Raw Puerh from Crimson Lotus received via tea trade. Easy drinking low bitterness, lower astringency, young puerh. Darker flavors, good length of flavor in the mind and empty cup.

Gonna be working on my taxes and some other stuff into the wee hours, so I figured I'd have a go at this new mao cha. It's so good! Harvested in March 2023 from old trees around Gua Feng Zhai village in Yiwu. It has a wild camelia taste up front, very greenish, but it hits a peak around the 3rd-5th steep. I've been doing two hot rinses in the front so I can get straight to the hui gan...

Finishing off the aged raw puerh MyTeaPal club sampler with the last of the 2013 Mangfei Dashu, Yongde, Lincang, raw puerh. Stored loose in Chengdu, Sichuan, for around 10 years. I think, ultimately, this might have been my favorite of the four.

A bit disappointed that the 2009 MyTeaPal Club Bulang Arbor, which has been stored in Chengdu since 2015, doesn't taste/smell like Chengdu chile oil. (It's actually a very good middle aged raw puerh.)

Interesting to see the response to the somewhat strong wet storage character of the 2011 Cao Gen raw puerh, (Bulang tea, Guangdong storage,) among the MyTeaPal club subscribers. I liked it and it reminded me I should revisit some of the teas in my collection with wet storage character. Most had another response.

2010-15 Yiwu Dashu raw puerh blend from MyTeaPal Club. Good scent and body, mild flavor. A bit of astringency, I assume from the younger leaves in the blend. Enjoyable, but a touch green.

2006 Mengku from Pu-Erh.sk. The clean storage on this makes it a nice contrast with the similar aged Yunnan Sourcing 2004 Big Snow Mountain Mengku the other day. The 2006 is probably a better tea, but it is much earlier in its evolution than the wet stored 2004. 2004 "Millennium Old Tree" Big Snow Mountain Raw Puerh was from a Yunnan Sourcing "Wet Storage" sampler. When I tried this tea back in 2019, I really didn't like it. Now I find it pretty appealing. Hard to say what has changed, me, the tea, or both of us. Probably both of us.

This 2009 Bulang Arbor raw puerh from the Jan MyTeaPal Club, is the gem of the set. Mellow flavor, touch of storage flavor, great length of scent, subtle lingering bitterness.

"2010-2015 Yiwu Dashu" from MyTeaPal Club this AM. Despite some time in humid Guangzhou storage, the storage character of this raw puerh is very mild. Actually, a very mild raw puerh overall. A pleasant tea, but it leaves few lingering impressions in the empty cup or in my mind.

Raw Puerh perception spot check with 2009 "Douji's Jingmai" from Pu-Erh.SK. I think this was a part of a sample set which featured "Douji's Pure Series" raw puerh cakes. Smoky, sweet, bitter; powerful energy.

2011 Cao Gen Raw Puerh from MyTeaPal Club. I usually associate Bulang with burly smoky teas, but this is not. The tea itself is fairly sweet and not super assertive. Stored in Guangdong since 2011, the assertive part of this raw puerh is the storage flavor. A good contrast to the clean storage of yesterday's Mangfei Dashu.

I use the MyTeaPal app to track my daily tea (and inventory). They also have a tea club. In Jan the theme was "aged raw puerh". 2013 Mangfei Dashu is the youngest selection, so I started there. Early impressions of smoke give way to fruit and incense in later steeps. The harshness of young puerh has mellowed and the energy is untroubling. More "middle aged", than truly "aged", it is quite tasty where it is in its evolution.
