The Lao Government has long sought to halt #deforestation through #shiftingcultivation via promotion of permanent commodity-oriented agriculture. BUT: while shifting cultivation did disappear, #rubber became the new deforestation driver.
1990-2000 marked the last years of #shiftingcultivation and a subsistence-based livelihood for local inhabitants. The early 2000’s marked a shift in Lao’s overall economic policy, which brought about a gradual #rubber boom in the uplands.
