Growing up, I loved listening to the South China Coastal Waters Bulletin (華南海域天氣報告) on RTHK, especially on typhoon nights. I could picture storm clouds spinning above the decks of sailboats as sailors listen to the zone-by-zone readout of the wind and wave conditions.

I recently learned that its format was adapted from the BBC Shipping Forecast, a beloved staple on the British airwaves that inspired music and poetry.

Niche podcast for fans of #sleep and the #ShippingForecast is the BBCs "Sleeping Forecast" and for even greater sleep inducement there's an episode with #cricket scorecards!! 😴zzzzzzzz

On BBC World Service, video calls for parrots to end the transmission. An advertisement for an upcoming presentation about attics. Now the broadcast on long wave starts the BBC Radio 4 day with the Shipping Forecast. Moderate or good, occasionally very poor at first.

Discovered today that the 0520 BBC Shipping forecast is no longer read by the Radio 4 continuity announcer but instead by the Met Office forecaster. They do a good job and all….. but I think I might need a stronger cup of tea!

@SomaFMrusty Being able to edit posts easily and non-intrusively is a great feature of Mastodon atm :) As a foreigner I predict that your next storm will be 'South to southeast, four or five, occaisionally six at first. Good for a time, turning poor later. Dogger, Fisher, German Bight. Cromerty southwest one thousand and two losing its identity'
