I was a guest on Japan Distilled podcast and waxed nerdy on an unusual type of shochu, Sanaburi kasutori #shochu.
Give it a listen. It was a fun talk!

If you're in the market for some quality #shochu, now is a good time to check Umami Mart's (Oakland, CA) website. They have a "Spring Cleaning" sale going on right now, and the entire trio of SG Shochu are discounted 20%. It's a solid opportunity to pick up some delicious and relatively hard to find brands. Kanpai!

Just want to say this was the ultimate pleasure to drink. So good. #Shochu #NoShochuNoLife
I just killed a bottle of Kanehachi barley shochu genshu and I might have had just a liiiiittle too much to drink...
Good, though. Very good.

Finally breaking out this Nagasaki shochu sampler I got at Huis Ten Bosch. I love little bottles that let you try stuff you'd not normally buy in bigger volumes.
Right to left: Sweet potato, wakame (😱), rice, regular potato, barley, and a different barley.
I started out with the potato. It was really quite nice. Less fragrant than sweet potato, but satisfyingly tuber-ish.
I would like to deeply apologize to the Shochu Gods for making fun of DEN-EN Symphony’s label because this shochu is truly a symphony for the senses. It’s very pure, but not lacking in personality at all. Drinking it, I had a mental image of a beautiful cream silk curtain, fluttering in a warm breeze. The waves of happiness just wash over with every sip. Ahhhhhh. #shochu
(Sorry for the over-the-top review, @christopherpellegrini 😅)
This has to be the most uncool label of a spirit in history. My husband has just acted out the imaginary conversation of the employees (wearing gum boots) and the shacho (also wearing gum boots) deciding on this name. 「社長、カッコいい名前ですね!」#shochu
We joked that this shochu looked like it had been named by a former bosozoku. ハイスタンダード😂 #shochu
#shochu makes @atandler’s 2023 list of drinking trend predictions. Kanpai!

Tonight's Tipple: Nekomata Koshu aged rice shochu from Chiyomusubi Shuzo in Shimane. This is the one shochu I keep on hand in 1.8l format at all times. It's sweet and rich and chestnutty.

For anyone who wants to day-drink in Yoyogi Park under the cherry blossoms on March 26th, 2023, I have something for you.
There's still about 50 minutes remaining to grab a deeply discounted ticket to the party. The prices go up at the stroke of midnight, so act fast.

There's a lot more info at the above link, but I have attached my first bottle reveal to give you an idea of the quality that awaits ticketed guests. Kanpai!
Tonight's Tipple: Yakiimo Kurose Beni shochu. This is made from roasted sweet potatoes, which brings some mellow sweetness to the mix. It's a lovely warm-up drunk oyuwari (with hot water).

I like chestnuts. I like shochu. Stands to reason I'd like chestnut shochu.
This one, from Kumamoto Prefecture, is a clay-pot version made from chestnuts with the inner peel on. The initial aroma struck me as quite cereal and savory, compared to the sweeter one of Dabada Hiburi.
I had it oyuwari, and it was quite rich and savory, too.
The cup is #Hagiyaki by Fujimoto Toshio.
