Trying to get into a #shoemaking course that is literally just down the road and wondering why on earth I never did this earlier. Oh right, they only just restarted the workshops. I’m hoping I can sneak in three terms (sandals/shoes/boots) before we move because otherwise it’s a weeklong trip to Wellington’s Shoe School.

Prototype design finished: buckle sewn on, eyelet fixed, upper stitched to sole. Fits like a glove.

Here is the prototype (improved design) on the left foot, with the original (now 5 yr old) design on the right foot. I rejigged the original to fasten with a side-release clip, and now I am wearing them around the house to see which is more comfortable and easier to don/ doff. Both are wonderfully wide-toed and flexible-soled.

I started making my own shoes, boots and sandals some years ago, because all the footwear I could buy hurt my feet.

I try to make footwear that lets feet move naturally, as they do when #barefoot.

Having experienced the benefits of wide toe shapes, flexible soles, and absence of raised heels, I will never go back to conventional footwear.

#diy #sewing #slippers #shoemaking Making wool plaid slippers from scraps of an old shirt that didn't fit me any more and a left overs from wool wrap-jacket made of blanket wool. First time using lasts for shoe making. I got shoe lasts for my birthday!

so I guess like most shoes are made out of leather or plastic? and I have no problem with leather to a certain degree but like it would be nice to have options that are both vegan and not super destructive to the environment
so far it's seeming they also make leather out of certain plants (e.g. pineapple and mushroom) so if I ever actually make shoes I'll see how terribly expensive that is lol
fish leather, while not vegan, is seeming like an alternative tho! @sustainablefashion #shoemaking
