Here's a sleepy little greater yellowlegs about to catch a marsh-nap in the rain.

Friday afternoon I got to visit a nearby marsh/wetland reserve, where--for the first time ever!--I spotted a "Wilson's" (so-called)
snipe.

It was hard to get any sort of photo--e & I were separated by stalks & muddles of plants like bog sedge & tule rushes as tall as I am, which sprouted or lay in mounds every few feet between us. But this photo should give an idea of eir camouflage (e *is* the marsh) & eir superb tuck-under- the-arm, snuggly-handbag shape.

@loren I had missed the whole shorb start though! Now I’m following both and and will absolutely be calling them moving forward! It tickles my brain and I like it. Like calling blueberries ‘bluebs’

Went to the zoo; got good photos of the local birds, like these killdeer. This is the first time I've seen them.

I rounded the corner of my hike around a local lake trail to find these two American avocets wading and feeding in the little run-off pool where the lake drains and meets a broad field.

I have never been so close to them before and stood a long while watching them as they stuck their open bills in the water and walked while swinging their heads back and forth to stir up the water insects for their lunch. So funny and strange and beautiful.

i love piping plovers so much. i saw three of them on the beach in georgia. they were all sticking one foot into the wet sand and wiggling it. i assume to disturb little worms and stuff? they were so cute whatever they were doing

This little flock of sandpipers was running along the beach, always staying just out of the waves rolling onto the beach.

They were well-coordinated, weaving in and out of the shallowest water. During the breaks, they'd dig their bills in the sand looking for goodies in unison until the next wave arrived.
