I don't agree it has to be completely banned, but it certainly should be restricted. I think the solution I proposed for commodities trading would work: require that the seller have confirmed arrangements in place to cover the deal at the time the deal is made. Selling borrowed shares? Not unless you have a deal set up to buy that many shares before you're due to complete the sale.

On the one hand, Hindenburg’s whole motivation is making money off short-selling, which makes for poor optics, and which in turn Adani has been milking as being anti-India instead of being, you know, anti-Adani.

On the other hand… will Indian investors seriously turn a blind eye to Hindenburg’s accusations, which Adani basically has not addressed at all?! How about foreign investors other than Hindenberg?

Of course, the crucial take here may be that Adani is immune to Hindenburg’s accusations, because of investor confidence in Adani’s presumed/apparent close relationship to the government. People are in for the short-medium term ride, and will only look for bag holders when the government itself looks shaky.

If you had shorted $2,000,000,000 worth of #TSLA shares like #BillGates supposedly had done when the share price was sitting at near $400 a share, what would be the total profit with today’s estimated opening price of around $116.

Answer: $2BB / $400 = 5,000,000 shares.

5MM times $116 = $580,000,000

$2BB - $580MM = $1,420,000,000.

Short Selling is selling something you don't actually own, its a bit like #fraud and comes under the banner of #financialisation. It's built around being destructive rather than productive.
