Missouri is known as the "Show Me State." This originates from an 1889 speech in which congressman William Vandiver (D) declared:
""I come from a state that raises [corn, cotton, cockleburs, and Democrats.] Frothy eloquence neither convinces nor satisfies me. I am from Missouri. You have got to show me."
