Sam had no idea how he had let all of this get so far out of hand. He felt like a soldier in a war of his transgressions who had stumbled into an active minefield. One wrong move, and the #shrapnel of his bad choices would rend asunder all that he was so desperately trying to maintain. Even though he only owed the mob $150,000 out of his original half million procurement, he still had one more day to come up with the rest. He had already mitigated the generosity of any other possible benefactors when he started helping out the Don with some of his problems. Now he had to make the biggest decision of them all. Does he retreat, leave the battle behind and start a new life in an unfamiliar land and hope that he can convince his loved ones to come with him despite the very real threat of being tracked down, or wade deeper into the dark underworld of the mafioso?

My future father was wounded after landing on the second wave at Utah Beach on D-Day. He was a doc and refused to be evacuated despite the shrapnel in his shoulder. Three weeks later, he was ordered to the nearest Naval Hospital where he surgeons removed all the metal embedded in his shoulder.

When he awoke, the nurse smiling at him was a woman who became my mother.

Shrapnel littered my body, the pain of the wound lingered. This barrage was constant, every day a battle for survival. I woke up every morning, barely recognisable from the night before. Who is this looking back at me? It's not the person I knew. Eyes that were once alive, now cavernous and dark. My hands grasp the vanity basin, a shadow looks back at me. I had dreams once, but it seems so long ago.

I put on my mask, to show the world that I'm okay. Everything is alright. The makeup can only cover the surface but the scars remain, a constant reminder of the life I live. If you even call it that. The fragments continue to spread throughout, lodged beneath the skin. The shards cut and slice, the pain almost unbearable. I live however in hope.

There's a beacon in the distance, the faintest glimmer of light. It shines intermittently, but it drives me and pulls me forward. I know I must walk towards it, even though the path is littered with danger. I tread carefully, gently on the path. Maybe the wounds will heal, purging the shrapnel.

I don't know, but I must try.
