I love ! This seemingly unassuming songbird is, in reality, a voracious little predator. It’s hooked beak is reminiscent of , and it uses it to effectively hunt insects, lizards, small mammals, and even other ! They even keep larders of food stored away impaled on tree branches or barbed wire. This one was hunting for insects in one of the last tracts tallgrass prairies in NW Arkansas.

Finally got pictures of this Long-tailed Shrike (Lanius schach), which I have occasionally seen at International Business Park, Singapore, on 16 May, 2019.

I managed to get to within a few metres of it to take these shots.

It is an uncommon resident bird in Singapore.

First time I've seen the Brown Shrike (Lanius cristatus) at my hometown in Perak, Malaysia. This was during the holiday trip last week.

Spotted a Brown Shrike several times over the next few days while there. Those might have been the same as this one.

I've heard of Shrikes in other parts of the world impailing their prey on sharp points and I wondered whether local Shrikes in Singapore do the same. Well, now I know. Warning: graphic images of an impaled frog in the link which features a Brown Shrike (Lanius cristatus).
