In this readers' response piece about teenage #shunning it's striking that it's about teenage girls, not boys. Also what gets you shunned: being 'different', not quite fitting in. For me as a #trans man (and therefore #AFAB) this was a big part of my experience of growing up: shunned by girls, assaulted by boys (sometimes assaulted by girls too), taunted by both. This is just another frame of something I talk about at length in my book, that Us vs Them thinking is established to create a Milieu Control towards testimonies from former members who had bad experiences in the group. This dehumanizes outsiders, and prevents existing members from sympathizing or even understanding the complaints of those harmed by the group.
