The stupid thing about having had (a mild case of) COVID in spring is that now, every time I'm down with a cold and suffering, I can't help thinking "well, COVID was ways less of a nuisance."

Even though I know that I would roll the dice on lasting effects with every case of COVID.

The fact that I got to quarantine and actually relax all day while I had COVID vs. having to take care of my kid all day while sick may contribute to this, of course....

Listened to a CBC bit evaluating lost time due to increased illness, and how it affects the economy. I'm going to go out on a limb, and say while the piece does make some good points, they have an expert spewing malarkey as well.

The story:

cbc.ca/listen/live-radio/1-379

When you say the average person is missing 1.4 hours per week (average, over the course of a year), and then you put an economic impact on that time, you're assuming the average person working 40 hours a week is productive for 40 hours a week.

Statistically, this is a false premise. If you look a little deeper, the average employee is actually productive for an average of 2-3 hours in any 8 hour day, assuming a 40 hour week.

The measure we SHOULD be looking at is how much of the missed time is productive time - did they get the work they were hired to do finished? If they did, exactly 0 hours were lost. If they did not, then we need to figure out how to help people be more productive.

Odds are good that pandemic or no pandemic, those people, if healthy, were likely either completing their work, or not completing their work the same before the start of the pandemic.

If their health was impacted by the pandemic, we need to look at ways of preventing illness, to avoid things happening that impact health and well being of workers. Clean air, masks. DO cost benefit analysis, figure out how to minimize health issues on the job. Teach people to protect themselves outside of work.

Points being

1. No, people don't "work" for 8 hours a day, they're AT work for 8 hours a day.
2. Losing 20 minutes a week to illness doesn't come out of productive time anyway.
3. Keeping people healthy and happy is far more important to productivity than keeping people in the office.

Railroads Riding High After Victory Against Workers

FRESH OFF A victory against workers demanding sick days as part of recent contract negotiations, two major railroads are pursuing a merger and a third, owned by billionaire Warren Buffett, is retaliating against one railroader who helped lead the push for better working conditions.

Why is it so hard to guarantee the foundations of the US economy, it’s workers, at least SOME paid sick days in the richest country in the world?

The manager was unduly harsh, but, yes it’s brutal when coworkers call off.

I'm glad that and railroad companies aren't using propaganda bots to try to change our minds...

, are you behind this? Or is it someone related to your friend Vlad?

I'm sick as a dog. My chair has made it clear he wants "butts in seats", and was reluctant to let me teach remotely once, last week.

Pretty sure he would have denied the request if I hadn't added, "...Or I can take a sick day and you can find an adjunct or other faculty member to teach today's lecture."

I'm still sick. I can cancel class, but then students will fail exams. There is no real possibility of anyone providing the content the students need.

Regarding the US railroad union negotiations, one important question that needs to be asked is why the union leaders agreed to a contract without sick days in the first place. Clearly that was important to the rank-and-file or they wouldn’t have voted down the deal. Looks like it might be time for new union leadership. And maybe a wildcat strike.

This week I watched kids come to because their parents could not afford time off to keep them home, and sick adults go to work because their cold "wasn't bad enough to use or sick time. America does not have a culture of staying home when sick. We don't know how. It's seen as idleness. Letting the company down. Foisting on the rest of the team. "are for melodramatists who are really just fine."

In short, we have learned nothing from a .
