@loudermilk averting the rail strike is not good news. It likely means that the railroad workers won't be able to win the #sickpay they're entitled to. A strike would have raised pressure on the #railways to bow to their demands and get the trains moving again. It's an example of why liberal democracy is bad for the working class.

@firdarrig the difference is that Democrats (save for good ole Joe Manchin) voted to add to the deal the #sickpay that the #railroad workers wanted. It resulted in no meaningful tangible difference but I think ignoring subtleties like this annoy me.

Since you added so much detailed info on other countries, here's more on Germany's sick pay.

The initial 6 weeks #SickPay are covered by the employer.
Afterwards, the (mandatory for all, except the rather rich) health insurance kicks in and pays
70% of the last gros income
for 78 weeks.

If illness persists longer than 1.5 years, people usually enter the pension scheme, either temporarily or permanently.
