Finished Sid Meier's MEMOIR! Civilization was probably the first game I seriously played as a kid and to this day, I hold the series and the 4X genre in high esteem. The book is a nice, light read, with some nice insights into game design in the 80s and early 90s. Could have been a bit more in-depth about design decisions in Civ. I also heavily disliked how Sid doesn't take criticism of the games (e.g. how they mishandle slavery) seriously. 4/5

In the 10th issue of Pixel Addict I write about my favourite 4X game - Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. I came back to playing this game before writing and once again was swallowed for few weeks. These games should have warnings on their boxes: Highly addictive, may cause "just one more turn" complex!

@paintedsky If I had a bajillion dollars I'd use it to wrestle back Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri from whichever licensing hell it is in (EA?) and fund an 8K/HD remaster/remake that allows you to play exactly as the original or with new balanced strategies as advised by the community of its die-hard players.

It took about five years for a sequel to appear, but when Civilization II appeared in 1996 it was astonishing. It was preceded by the quite good Colonization in 1994, but for the first time, the map was shown in an isometric view and the game was shipped on a CD-ROM with lots of early multimedia. It was a worthy upgrade, but in retrospect just a stepping stone to much more.

@transitdiagrams My sympathy: you've never played . Produced by and associates for in the 1990s, it had a 32-station limit and a 32-train limit. Processing-plants could stop production randomly even if you had paid a million dollars to build them and had a long train approaching with material that could not earn you anything anywhere else. Very complex formula for calculating how much you earned per delivery. Addictive but annoying.

Railroad Tycoon was the first game I bought for my Commodore Amiga 2000 in late 1990 and I played the heck out of it for a long time. It was a really good simulation that in some aspects went over my head - included in the box was a very thick manual and I only really learned to play it properly after some years! Railroad Tycoon was just the beginning of the great Sid Meier games...

I first encountered Pirates! on the Commodore 64 as a (pun of course intended) pirated copy, but by the time the Amiga came around I was lucky to have found an original boxed version. It came with a manual and a nice fold-out map and two 880kb 3.5” disks! The Amiga version was a good port with nicer graphics, but even today I still like the C64 original better.
