Loads of my contacts are on and I really can't understand why it is more popular than (could be subjective based on my contacts cohort).

I dedicated this end of the week to reading some papers, especially about and . I couldn't find a white paper on the former and I know research papers are written on those so there is little I can say about it.

But here is my statement - I can't find an advantage of Telegram over Signal. What am I missing?

It's incredibly sad to me that Signal (the leadership) gave up a position of interoperability and trust, and funneled users from Signal (the app) to Google Messages.[1]

Now Google Messages is one of only a few apps that can talk to a new iPhone out of the box. It also has the best encryption support of those Android options.

@joel it's compromised on trust & implementation factors, not the tech. I do not trust them after this fiasco.

Let me be clear that I actually do use the , which is a great protocol, when I send 1-on-1 SMS/MMS using the app on @fdroidorg. This app is still using the protocol without sending any data to this trust-compromising company.

@AlexAlzate before existed, there were two separate apps - one for encrypted SMS/MMS & the other for encrypted calls. The is good, but this implementation is crap with centralized servers and you can never have your own server.

That separate encrypted text app was maintained. I use it for 1-on-1 texting with friends. It does not send any data to the Signal servers and is just between you and that person. The link is here
