I discovered #ttrpg zines this week, and I'm now trapped trying to make a #sile template for an 8-page zine. It's been quite fun learning the tool.

One of the projects to consider for #DigitalTypesetting is #SILE. It was written by @simoncozens and currently mostly developed by Caleb Maclennan. It features a Teχ like custom markup language and is written in #LuaLang. It is MIT licensed. So it uses a line-breaking algorithm implementation in #LuaLang. Examples are shown on a website:

#SILE only outputs #PDF. Most recently it also got support for mathematical formulas. It is said to work great for grid typesetting.

(4) Modern solutions include (besides Teχ): #SILE, #speedata publisher and #typst.

On Tuesday, I will give a talk about #DigitalTypesetting at the local #python community.

My idea is to create some first slides for digital typesetting to expand them over the course of the next months. I will also introduce various existing solutions for digital typesetting (#LaTeχ, #SILE, #speedata, #yex, #typst, …) and my own project #typho.

#SILE is getting #VariableFonts support, using #HarfBuzz for both layout and for instanciating fonts before embedding in PDF.

I've been attempting to recreate #WhiteWolf books with LaTeX, but you can really feel those 40-years of code-upon-code making it all a bit janky.

Writing/typesetting my first try at designing a PBTA #ttrpg, where players infiltrate corporate fortresses to steal info and sell it on the streets.

Learning how to use the #sile (kinda like #latex) typesetting tool, it's been fun.

Thinking of switching from #latex to #sile for the #WhiteWolf #RPG books, as it looks like less of a faff, but it's hard to know before doing all the work.

I’ve been obsessing over why integral subscript and superscripts look ugly in #SILE and not in LuaTeX, although I respect the OpenType standard.

Then I found a paragraph in LuaTeX’s manual that basically says “Yeah their placement should use the font kerning parameters, but not all fonts implement that so we just tweak the positioning parameters in a non-standard way to make integrals look nice.”
