PATHS TO PARADISE (1925): Another #silentfilm revisit, this of the LOC restoration recently Kickstarted by Ben Model. Big visual improvement over what previously floated around. Charming light comedy. Fun to see the duo of Raymond Griffith and Betty Compson (whose dreadful film survival rate probably precludes the rediscovery she deserves). Feels like they would have worked as a regular comedy pair in setups like this. The flashlight gag slayed me (again). #classichollywood

FOOLISH WIVES (1922): Revisited this for first time in a decade, this the 2020 restoration, which- let’s get this out of the way first- is an A+ effort, beautifully done, far better than what we had. It injects new life into this. I enjoyed this better on 2nd viewing, Von Stroheim’s weird perversions always a scream. Still not convinced this is great- very long, with no real standout performances- but willing to concede this is good. Sets, photography may be best attributes. #silentfilm

A ROMANCE OF HAPPY VALLEY (1919): One of D.W. Griffith’s “pastoral Artcrafts”, this small scale #silentfilm has Robert Hatton abandoning True Americana (rural Kentucky) and local sweetheart Lillian Gish (never more adorable) in search of fortune in the Big Apple. Surprise, doesn’t go as planned! Very much a Griffith piece in its style, its themes, the wording of its intertitles. If you like that sort of thing, you will like this one. (One minor plus: less “rural humor” than the usual Griffith.)

Not an official endorsement from our museum, but every time this blogger and his family are in #Phoenix we go for dinner at #OrganStopPizza and get a concert on the #MightyWurlitzer. I suspect other #SilentFilm fans would enjoy it too.

WAVES OF PASSION (’30): Quite the international production here, the ability to pull these off another underrated casualty of the #silentfilm era’s end. German/Estonian co-production starring a Russian (Vladimir Gajdarov, also director, playing a Brazilian) and a Slovenian (Ita Rina, of TONKA OF THE GALLOWS). Very good melodrama. Gajdarov as undercover reporter infiltrating booze-running ring, falling for smuggler’s daughter Rina. Beautifully filmed. Loved cross-cutting during dancing scenes.
