Want to avoid having an incurable respiratory disease?

Wear a respirator and use filtration and ventilation. Not talking about a pandemic in this case.

Today in Labor History March 30, 1930: Three thousand workers, mostly African-American, began construction on the Hawks Nest Tunnel in West Virginia. The employer cut costs by failing to provide safety equipment. Additionally, bosses forced the men to work 10-15-hour days, often at gunpoint, without breaks and without masks to protect themselves from the silicon dust. Consequently, hundreds of workers died of silicosis. Possibly over 1,000 people, one-third of the entire workforce, died from silicosis, in one of America’s worst cases of mass workplace mortality.

✨NEW PAPER✨Imagine you’ve got a piece of plastic stuck in your stomach - stabbing, poking, and prodding constantly. Besides being incredibly uncomfortable, what would that do to your delicate internal tissues?
One of our Honours students (Hayley) has just published her first, first-author paper in the Journal of Hazardous Materials, investigating the effect that has on the formation of scar tissue within the stomach of from . While scar tissue formation is a natural part of the healing process, excessive scarring can impact tissue function and cause disease, known as paper here ➡️ sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
We found plastic ingestion was significantly related to severe, organ-wide scar tissue formation in the stomach, with some birds exhibiting a near-complete loss of tissue structure (photo panel on LEFT: collagen/scar tissue has stained blue). This is the first time plastic-related scar tissue formation has been documented in wild animals, but what we could see was so severe that it also led us to propose a new disease, – fibrosis as a result of plastic.
As >1200 species are already documented to ingest plastic across both aquatic and terrestrial environments (including us!), our findings have major implications.

Perlite in our clothes is like thousands of needles constantly poking into our skin. doesn't help. Repeated exposure can likely cause which we suspect Tara may already have from another event years ago. The particles have a trait similar to static electricity where they stick to EVERYTHING and spread like a bomb went off.

My Dad suffered terribly from (not silicosis) in his final years, more than 40 years after he ceased installing telephone PABX systems in asbestos-riddled office buildings & factories. It took decades for the symptoms to appear, and they were debilitating.

I used to help him shop every week & it would take him about an hour to walk the ~200 metres from Coles at Warringah Mall to the bus interchange, as he would have to stop every 10 or 15 metres & rest for a few minutes to catch his breath. If is anything like asbestosis, Australia needs to ban the use of artificial stone (mainly used for kitchen benchtops) ASAP.

"For the last 60 years, silicosis was very rare in Australia. Due to the increased use of artificial stone, we are now seeing a re-emergence of this terrible disease."

Banning artificial stone could prevent 100 lung cancers and 1,000 cases of silicosis, where dust scars the lungs theconversation.com/banning-ar
