Progress on the #PiDP-11 kit last night.

The Raspberry Pi 3 A+ has been loaded with the #SimH software and various bootable OS images that can run on the PDP-11/70. Connected it to the GPIO interface on the back of the PCB where it will live. Powered it up for a "smoke test" and let it boot into the default "idled" program that runs some patterns on the LEDs.

Then inserted the panel switches and got them soldered in.

A while back, I stumbled onto Oscar's #PiDP-11 kit, a 6:10 scale replica of the PDP-11/70. As a fan of #RetroComputing, I decided to buy the kit and attempt to build it. It's powered by an RPi running #SimH, which gets wired up via GPIO to the front panel switches/lights, faithfully reproducing the functionality of the original.

Finally started building this evening and, after about an hour, managed to get all the diodes and resistors soldered on and the LEDs staged.

By the by, it seems like https://github.com/open-simh/simh is the version of #SIMH that still has the good licence. The "Classic" release under the old repo now has some kind of "modifications must never affect device timings" thing in the *licence* (You read that right, not the contribution guidelines: they're using COPYRIGHT LAW to enforce their technical opinions!)

It's neat in that you just upload tape images, save state in local browser storage, the works. It's a lot less faff than working out which #simh fork is the actual free software version and which is the weird petty licence, and then building silly java programs to emulate a front panel.

I plan to mount the #RaspberryPi (running #SimH) to the outside of the back plane of the wooden housing. RasPi and the main PCB will be connected with a ribbon cable running through the back plane. This way, I can access all ports from the RasPi (SD, USB, Ethernet).

One think I've never used before is a unix that has TCP/IP but does not have sockets and does not have ifconfig. It does have "netstat -i" to show network interfaces. I just need to figure out how to add one to simh.

The copy of v8 unix has a /dev/console that is permanently stuck at a baud rate of zero. This causes vi to go into "low baud rate mode" where it doesn't paint the whole screen. Finally with a working DZ board I can use a "normal" terminal.
