Aaaaand we haz blinken lights (again).
Had to rearrange the pixels somewhat and adjust the code, of course. Oh and those glorious orange bulb sockets needed some tweaking. They are designed for filament lamps so the inner parts and a good chunk of the bottom of each socket had to go.
It's not 100% finished but perfectly operable. My Primary Buffer Panel is alive again 🤓 😜
Crimped roughly 250 connectors and did lots of soldering. Still WIP but I rolled the first successful button tests!!1eleven
More tomorrow. Falling asleep here 🥱
(Ignore the wobbling, there are almost no supporting frames behind for easier access to the wires).
🤓 Painted the button box, added more buttons and the LCD and set it to playing the #BSG DRADIS animation[1] of the Pegasus just for show.
Next is wiring everything up (and when that is done finishing the frame for the display) and add decals.
[1] The Loop was created by David Gian-Cursio (https://www.gian-cursio.net/2016/07/battlestar-pegasus-dradis-screens/) for Diaspora: Shattered Armistice (a total conversion for the FreeSpace Open engine).
Did some test assembly today. Running out of buttons. I have to salvage my version 1 now which kinda sucks because I won’t be able to actually play with it any more 😆 Still very happy with the result 👌
Some progress on the left panel. I recreated the cardboard mock-up with a wooden panel (that I'll eventually replace with an acrylic plate at some point). Sadly I had to start salvaging my v1 panel so it's no longer operational :( I also made some fitting tests with the old display that I'm hoping to replace soon.
@bekopharm I swear I read "#SimPit #Macos," and I was...damn, apple has made their computer complex nowadays...
Kerbal Controller
The article "Kerbal Controller - the Basics" https://www.instructables.com/Kerbal-Controller-the-Basics/ introduced me to a small but awesome #SimPit community on Discord.
It's also of interest for people not into #KSP as it describes the basics for DIY controllers of any kind very well.
The control panel by used for demonstration has another bonus going: It's completely modular and can be 3D printed at home.
Can recommend 👍

Hi there
@diysimulators :)
Just noticed that there is a #simpit community starting out on discuss. This is right down my alley.
Mebbe I should reconsider and add a Lemmy account too 🤔
Heh, 12 days ago I uploaded a series of blog entries about my #SimPit stuff to #Hackaday.
I was confused by it's UI and afraid of making mistakes and kinda expected angry comments from fellow #makers or some mod.
Nothing happened. Zero. Nadda. Not even spam showed up. And I expected that place to be packed!
Today I finally got my first Like over there so someone must have stumbled over it - and yes apparently from a #space nerd too ❤️

Short demo Primary Buffer Panel with old TV/VFD effect
This is a css animation effect adding "scanlines" like on some old tv to my #SimPit. There's also a tiny octagon grid effect laid over everything. I'm going for a VFD (vacuum fluorescent display) effect here like old electronics used to have it. It's hard to see from the phone camera but it looks absolutely rad in reallife (imho :D)
Low-Sci-Fi!
Jon cobbles up that chat "AI" to his #EliteDangerous #SimPit. Really fun stuff. My kind of nerd level 👌 including text to speech to make it a snippy bitching Betty: https://youtu.be/miQBHcP8YzA
📺 I hacked a mod for #X4Foundations to get ship telemetry and targeting data to my "Primary Buffer Panel" on Linux PC using a socket server. This is a demonstration video of my #SimPit made from cardboard on a budget usually used to play #EliteDangerous now also used for X4: Foundations: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKIdr4VYId8 / https://tube.tchncs.de/w/gAmZsfTun1Ppp4RS8Sa6FM

Modding my #X4Foundations into using the same data format as #EliteDangerous does so I can run my #SimPit without changes. Things are coming together nicely :D
#simpit #elitedangerous #x4foundations
Here are the humble beginnings of a working example to read the ship status of #x4foundations in a format very similar to the Status File of #EliteDangerous
Both games are quite similar and by using a "well established" format it should be possible to use this with existing companion apps - like my own #SimPit
It uses the "Named Pipe API" of "sn_mod_support_apis" - on #Linux PC 😁 This was not supported by this MOD so far but I made it work.
Well, at least on my machine 🤓

Sometimes, I just need to space out for a bit.
