for day 6, a song of transformation from I’m not Bossy, I’m the Boss, the final full-length album Sinéad O’Connor released, in 2014. May favourite song from that album, it’s well-crafted and full of hard-won self-knowledge. youtu.be/jMzY_KQIKjU

In 2018, Sinéad O’Connor took a step she, like many intense, learned Christian seekers, found logical and inevitable and converted to Islam, taking the name Shuhada’ Sadaqat, though she continued to perform and record as Sinéad O’Connor. She sang the Call to Prayer and posted video of herself doing so. The freedom of her movements is striking, suggesting consuming happiness. I wish that happiness could have been with her always. day 5 youtu.be/FMx6jUFUFmQ

Sinéad O’Connor’s 1997 Gospel Oak EP included her version of “She Moved through the Fair,” a song collected by Padraic Colum, who claimed the 1909 lyrics as his own. The most compelling earlier recording (like Sinéad’s devoid of the Paddywhackery that plagues some) is by Margaret Barry, recorded by Ewan MacColl in 1955 (youtu.be/rNAMC1T3Q0A.) I know it from a cassette my dad taped from ancient vinyl at the library (Folkways?)

(a formal 7-day mourning period for Sinéad O'Connor, with media as casseroles) day #2: Geoff Edgers's lovely revisiting of his 2020 interview with Sinéad O'Connor, which includes an embedded sound file--recorded on someone's phone, complete with the bloop-bloop-bloop of a Bluetooth speaker and the woody creaking of a chair--of Sinéad singing an untitled new song that begins "Last night I dreamed I was on fire." wapo.st/3rPlLJD

yesterday I proposed , a 7-day period of formal mourning for Sinéad O'Connor, with the community as the family and media instead of casseroles. My first post, yesterday (Day 1) was Sinéad's 2020 cover of Mahalia Jackson's "Trouble of the World." I'm reposting it now because I had to delete my account and make a new one (privacy catastrophe.)
