Woke up early, so day-drinking a bit with some Miyagi-Kyo Single Malt whiskey, from Japan.
An excellent single malt, with medium peat and a nice but not overbearing smoky finish.
Well worth the heavy price, at least for a treat or social event.
The grain is all grown in Miyagi Prefecture, where I taught English for 3 years, 2001-2004, in Ishinomaki City.

After the initial taste, the mid taste comes. I tasted spices, black pepper, and after that, some dried fruits, such as apricot. I also got a vanilla taste at the very end, which complements this perfectly!

I suggest consuming bitter chocolate and dried fruits along with this whiskey.

I quite like this single malt whiskey so far, and I will definitely purchase again.

The initial taste directly reminded me of seafood, both meat and vegetables. Such as smoked meat, sea kidney beans, even moss and calamari. Additionally, when you breathe, you feel the saltiness and burn feel from the alcohol.

After a week of working on my boat Jess, she's back on her berth where I managed to get the headsail on this morning. All set for our 1st trip next weekend. This evening I'm going to get wired into these and watch some snooker.

Balvenie 12, 40% abv, CF, E150. Still trying to get to like this one 🤔

Shackleton Blended Malt , 40% abv, NAS, E105 (probably) CF. A new one for me, I have read good things about it, but I am still making up my mind. First impressions are, it's OK, cinnamon, sugary honey and butterscotch. Orange peel notes but lacking a bit of complexity. A supermarket bargain at £18.

Lochlea Spring Edition, 2nd Crop 46%, NAS, NCF, NC. I picked this up on impulse at Geraldo's in Largs yesterday which sells chocolates, ice-cream and #whisky! I wasn't that struck by the 2022 edition of this, but again I have read good things about the 2023 and it seems to be a big improvement. I shall report back!

Yesterday was #SingleMalt Night, so I only had one humble chaser by #Homeland (#Amsterdam, 🇳🇱), namely their Havermeester All Oat Ale, a hazy NE style Pale Ale brewed solely from oats (hops: Galaxy, BRU1, Vic Secret). Very interesting interpretation of the style. Quite "bready", but also very smooth & decent but toned down fruitiness. #BeerNerd #schlueckglueckglueck

Sunday night drams. It's an early start tomorrow as my boat is lifted out first thing, in the morning so not many of these tonight. There's a couple in this bottle and that will do.

Ledaig 10, NC, NCF, 46.3% abv.

Briny smokiness, like bonfire on a beach. Some sweet floral notes and a hint of dark mocha. Sweet, spicy, malty and creamy mouthful. Lingering peppery warmth, a smidgen of liquorice with soft smoke and salt.

If you have ever wondered why a number of whiskies have the odd 46.3% abv (or some other tenth over the 0.3) it's to make sure that the final bottle will always be above 46% abv that magic percentage where the dram stays free of Scotch mist when cold water or ice is added. Below this the fatty acids, oils and esters clump together forming micelles - which is the cloudiness. Scotch mist has never bothered me in the way it seems to bother producers.

I've been working on the boat all day and I've had enough now. Last wee job was to fit some fold away shelving next to the sink. It's always tight for space in the galley, particularly when I am cheffing Sunday roast dinner. 😀
It also makes a fine shelf for the drams.

Glen Allachie 10, 57.8%, NCF, NC.

Blended by that genius Billy Walker, from Pedro Ximenex and oloroso sherry puncheons casks so it's bursting with dried fruit, sweet heather honey and chocolate. At cask strength it's a real hit of alcohol but it is very smooth no rough edges whatsoever. Seems a shame to water it down. Spicy cinnamon and ginger treacle. on the tongue. Warm, slightly bitter finish with even more spice and dark chocolate. Yummy!

Not much left. Dilemma, finish it off now or have something else and save some for another time?
