Today was often wet, which was fine as we were staying in the same accommodation as yesterday. And above #Strontian, there's a good place for some easy #mountainBiking, with a rocky path, a #singleTrack one and great views.

Tomorrow due to be dryer, we'll be off to #Glencoe by the road and #ferry - which accepts only #foot passengers and #cyclists at present!

8y ago I bought a used 26” Cannondale Scalpel Lefty XC racing bike with a slightly too small frame.

I was a novice mountain biker. When I told my mentors the bike was trying to throw me head first they scoffed.

8y later I know I was right. Trust your experience!

I do like that ornery bike though. I ride it often on blue trails where my modern bike is overkill. It punishes mistakes harshly so helps me improve.

Doing trail work today so again reflected that mountain biking is a rare red-blue common ground. Bad ass options, nature, car-free but needs cars, social, physical, none of the politics of city bike paths, free of charge mostly.

Walton family pays for a lot of trail. Red states and burbs build trails; some great mountain biking in low income terrain rich red states. Abandoned mines make good trail.

Singletrack is having a moment.

Getting down the switchbacks is quite a ride, especially with all the rain damage to the trail. It's a steep drop, though it is possible to climb it from the bottom. I've managed to clean the entire hill three times in the 15 years I've been riding it.

The rockslide washout looked more scary than riding it turned out to be. The truly frightening part was right near the bottom, past the bucolic singletrack in the trees. Deep rain ruts - a few inches to nearly a foot deep - criscross the entire trail in the last steep part. Barely avoided a Superman over the bars. Twice.

Even though I was riding solo, getting down that nasty bit invoked a nervous but hearty laugh and a big grin. The epitome of a "shits and grins" moment.

The best kind of ride!

I don't know how many kids we had at #ChinaCamp in #Marin county yesterday, as part of the away #mtb ride for the #OaklandDevo middle school mtb club, but my group, 'blue 2,' one of eight, had 9 kids in it. We've got 94 riding #MountainBikes this season. We had fun, everyone returned safe, with more skills and big smiles.
