Version 2.3.0 of the background worker for https://combine.social is out.

This means nothing for you as a current user because it is deployed already and running 😅

Even more so because not everyone has been migrated over from the v1.x workers to the new v2.x workers yet.

For those who have been migrated, you should start noticing that remote replies from pleroma and friendica will start showing up (because I switched from masto.js to megalodon-rs as the fediverse client library).

I myself will notice that since it is built in #Rust instead of #TypeScript running on #Node, that it uses about half as much RAM and runs 5x faster - again, as a user you won't care 😜

As always, the privacy policy is "we don't read any of your message content, we don't store any of your messages anywhere" and if you de-authorize the app we forget about you completely.

For new users, this means that CSP restrictions will no longer prevent you from authenticating the application.

It also made the signup page significantly slimmer (the mastodon client library is no longer embedded into the page) since the verification process is now done server side.

On average, https://combine.social is processing 50 messages per second currently.

It’s making sure that people get all the missing replies to messages from remote instances in their feeds.

It makes me happy to be able to provide a service which makes your experience better, even if it’s in a small way.

I recently spun up my new #singleuserinstance using #hetzner

In order to make it cheap, I chose an ARM machine with #IPv6 only, and it did throw me a few curve balls... but hey, it only costs €3.29/mo to run!

Updated my #SingleUserInstance to Mastodon v4.1.3 without any issues (except Ruby 3.0.6 took forever to compile, heh)

My RAM usage is now sitting at 1.05GB instead of the 1.5GB+ I was getting for the past several years. Currently my plan is to replace this #SingleUserInstance of Mastodon with my own Pleroma instance, but I have been thinking of making an alt account for a long time anyhow because federation is hard :)

@jay Three things you can do to enliven your small-numbers instance (we do all of these):

1: Set up a "Librarian" account that follows others of general interest whether you in particular care about them or not. Our librarian follows a lot of news, art, and science, but use it with _particular_ abandon to fill out your Federated feed.

2: Check said Federated feed, have the Librarian follow people boosted and lively.

3: Use the relay functionality to relay hashtags via the hashtag relay server:

Also check out generalist relays and add some. You might want to have a solid defederation list first to be safe, but we didn't have any real trouble.

Yeah, I should probably give up and delete my instance. It was a good 5ish years until Mastodon 4.0 came and ruined the software's performance so it constantly uses 2gb of RAM. Maybe there's something I can do to fix it, but I'm exasperated and doubtful and Mastodon was always using 1.5gb anyway which is more than I really wanted it to.

I just have to decide if it's worth hosting something new myself or if I will join some other instance. (I might not do this tonight but I'll see how I feel after work) #SingleUserInstance

I’m still debating whether I want to run my own @pixelfed instance, or continue to use pixelfed.social. 🤔 On the one hand, I like the idea of me being in complete control of my data (hence me (pseudo-) running my own #Mastodon instance (thank you @mastohost, hence the “pseudo-" qualifier), but on the other, I am not sure I want the headache of managing the actual installation, dealing with updates etc. Thoughts? #SingleUserInstance #pixelfed

I used Cloudfare tunnels to bypass the port forwarding issue, and to make the SSL certificates easier to deal with.
