Since I am likely not the only one to ever encounter this, and also to save it for later when I'm pulling hair out trying to figure it out:
If you run into an expired certificate error while running a #Mastodon instance on #DigitalOcean here's the correct command to run to fix it:
"sudo certbot renew --nginx"
Obviously no quotes needed. Seems to be related to #certbot running in 'standalone' mode using the same ports as Mastodon so it fails to renew.

Regarding legal compliance for Mastodon site admins, both domestic and international, has there been any effort to take a community approach?

It seems like some kind of legal insurance, not for profit, or other group approach could provide a framework for a limited degree of legal advice.
