I’ve previously written about https://build.boddez.net, where I set up, using as few plugins as possible, an “IndieWeb-compatible” microblog.

Back then, I used WordPress’ own Twenty Twenty-Three. These last few days, though, I’ve been adapting TT3 to reflect my actual site. TL;DR: I created a new, minimalist block theme! It can be found, for now, at https://github.com/janboddez/janboddez.

Footer still has some hardcoded text in it, and the header quite explicitly references a menu on my site.

Think if I replaced those with some starter blocks, this would be a fairly generic block theme.

Even more so if I took out the (IndieBlocks) note archive template.

I could add all modifications in a child theme, then.

Or in the Site Editor directly (that’s what it’s for).

Made my first actual WordPress theme using the Site Editor.

It's been both exciting and frustrating. But it fits my needs, it works, and it's been way simpler than with PHP/CSS. Also, fun to learm.

Will probably release it on Github sometime. Even if it's really not much. #WordPress #SiteEditor

#WordPress 6.2 is just around the corner, but "is one of the last planned major releases of Phase 2 on the Gutenberg project roadmap." So after this coming release, the #SiteEditor will be what it is. It looks like many people have been right, there is still plenty of room for #PageBuilders.

I love the Site Editor. Still, it's a second time my *stored in the DB* changes to the theme end up lost, with no apparent reason.

Like, they were there, and now they're not. With no mean to restore them. Good thing I'm not into designing complex stuff huh.

Customizing the author page for the first time on this WordPress site using #Gutenberg #siteeditor and it baffles me that #wordpress lets us get this far into not making this easy to do here.

I wish I could have a sample author show up here so i can see in real time if I picked the correct stuff or not. I cant see a way to do that.

As well as I think I know the #WordPress #SiteEditor, there are still aspects of it that bamboozle me. 🤷‍♂️

While I understand that theme frameworks and plugins like #Divi, #Elementor and #PWBakery are popular so many #WordPress users default to them, they also tend to add a lot of complexity to sites.

The #WordPress #SiteEditor is really flexible, and while there is a learning curve for this (like the other options), there is so much less complexity when you don't pile on _all_ the plugins.
