Watched a little That Mitchell and Webb Look (initially for "Cricket, here in Yorkshire?") then The Armstrong and Miller Show, as they're about the same age.

Weird how in hindsight Armstrong and Miller is much more consistently good, even though it's much less well remembered. Most sketches are bangers, but Mitchell and Webb is half and half classics and duffers (some poorly aged, some flat at the time).

THE ERNIE KOVACS SHOW - 7/2/1956, NBC

One of the few ongoing queer characters on 1950s American television was Percy Dovetonsils: comedian Ernie Kovacs's beloved lisping, purse-lipped poet who recited bad verse on a set representing his Greenwich Village penthouse. Kovacs used this character on various shows for more than ten years.

Given 1950s censorship of LGBTQ content, Percy's sexuality was mostly hinted at, though on rare occasions he would do things like comment on a cameraman's "muscular legs" or pluck petals from a flower reciting "He loves me, he loves me not..."

THE JACK BENNY SHOW - 5/23/1954, CBS

This 1954 comedy sketch includes some of the earliest "transsexual jokes" in my video collection (though there were earlier ones on radio). They're indirect references, since TV censors would not have allowed anything more specific.

"Denmark jokes," often mocking in tone, were common in US comedy for about 20 years starting in 1952, after news of Christine Jorgensen's surgery in Denmark first made headlines.

In this clip, note how Jack Benny loses concentration when guest star Bob Hope starts ad-libbing new lines. The skit, "The Road to Nairobi," is a spoof of the "Road to..." films that Bob Hope costarred in with Bing Crosby and Dorothy Lamour.
