The red trillium, stinking Benjamin. Flowers can be red or white. Trillium erectum. It has a nasty odor, like a wet dog, is used to attract pollinators. It's a medicinal plant used to aid in childbirth and menstrual disorders. Also used as a poultice for tumors and ulcers. Edible but not pleasant food.

Leather flower also called a leather vasevine, Clematis viorna native to southeastern US. Although it is endangered in Pennsylvania and Illinois. It loves woodland areas and shade. It can grow up to 20 feet long. Named for the thick skin on the flowers.

Cutleaf geranium. Geranium dissectum, or cutleaf cranesbill. Usually grows prone so it can reach a length of 2 feet. Native to Europe but is found in both the east and west coasts of the US and Canada. Considered invasive. The flowers are tiny at only 1/4 inch across.

The round-lobed hepatica, or liverleaf. Anemone Americana. It is found evergreen and deciduous forests usually in the drier areas. Their blossoms arise from past years leaves which are pretty funky with their three lobes. They start out green and as they age they slowly turn a reddish brown.

The Slenderleaf false foxglove Agalinis tenuifolia. Found east of the Rocky mountains in woodlands, fields. It's another hemi parasitic plant, it does well if planted alongside other plants because it feeds off their roots. The flowers are small around a half inch long and only last for a day or two.

It's all over the western US and Canada outside of California. It can be mistaken for edible bulbs or onions and it can cause heart rhythm problems and convulsions. So steer clear!

The California poppy, eschscholzia californica. It is the state flower of California and is found in most states, but native to the west coast. It is edible and is used as a food garnish. Blue hearts, or Buchnera Americana are a hemi-parasitic wildflower. They can grow independently but grow stronger when they feed off the roots of another plant. Found in the eastern US. Endangered in Canada found only near lake Huron. They bloom year round but peak between June and September.

The corpse flower, the largest unbranched influorescence in the world. Amorphophallus titanum,  native to Sumatra, its massive flower smells like a dead body when it blooms, it only blooms for 24 to 36 hours every 4 to 7 years. Its first bloom can take over 10 years!

Tourists strolling. These largely unplanned sketches are loosely based on reference pics from YouTube. I don’t draw beforehand. I combine people from in scales and relationships that I decide on the spot. The aim is to get a whole ‘storehouse’ of figures in my fingers to employ freely in my paintings.
