Power's still on, but land-based internet is down. Thankfully we've still got data signal. Very pretty out, but warm earth means everything is soft and squishy. No good for today! The are making the best of the situation.

We'll take spring blizzards over tornadoes any day.

We squeezed in another outing with our today! A cold night helped set the wet spring snow we got over the weekend, so we ran north to Interstate State Park on the Wisconsin side of the St. Croix River. We got in some decent skiing on our Hok (type) skis before the warm noon sun softened things up and made the return trip a bit sticky.

Skijoring In Switzerland: What It Is – And Where To Try It

The most famous country for Skijoring is Switzerland. The very first skijoring race occurred in the Engadine valley was in 1906. Skijoring became so famous and prevalent that races were moved onto a pre-arranged track.

Majestic on dense, icy snow at Murphy Hanrehan park today. A cold night after warm days meant dense snow with an icy layer on top: like skiing on florist foam with a thin layer of brulée on top. The official trails were densly packed by winter hikers, so we explored the open prairie on our Hok skis, letting the huskies follow their instincts and their noses.

While Dale took the fast huskies for a long skijoring run on the regular skis, I took the 13-year-old Gypsy for a meander on the Hok skis.

We spent most of the time skiing on the un-tracked side of the multi-use trail, but near the end Gypsy decided she would rather follow some coyote tracks out across the open prairie. With the Hok skis, no problem! I can go wherever she can go.

Photo of my mug goes here.

Carrying GMRS radios in the cell-signal-free wilderness, to keep in touch with @twitchydog as we explore the Moose Trail west of Poplar Lake off the Gunflint Trail.

Using the Hok skis on this moose-mangled multi-purpose trail, which were overall a good choice over our X-C skis.

Today's adventure with the took us down the Moose Trail, a multi-purpose trail that follows the northern border of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. (But it doesn't enter the wilderness where we were, so you don't need a permit.)

There was plenty of sign of moose, trampling the trail, but we saw none.

For this trek, we tried the Hok skis. They were good for the uneven terrain, especially gliding over deep moose fooprint holes.

Deep snow may slow down our , but it won't stop them!

Gypsy would have loved to explore the exciting smells just beyond the edge of campsites we visited, if not for the hazard of humans on skis trying to follow down the steep slopes.

In the second photo, Zeena pauses at the top of a several-story drop, the white edge nearly invisible against the white of the frozen lake below.

Two days in a row of long adventures will tire out a trio of .

Don't worry, they had plenty of energy for lunch when we returned to the cabin!

After 10+ miles of , tired rest up for the next adventure.

Looks like Tonttu is not the most happy with his "half" of the dog bed, but he'll survived. (His butt is actually hanging off the back of the bed.) Zeena deserves her comfort!

Today we hit the Banadad Trail, one of the few groomed ski trails up here open to . It's a 27km single nordic/X-C track through the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, paralleling the Gunflint Trail.

Temps were around 8F/-13C and a light snowfall overnight added a dusting on top of the groomed track for a bit of extra glide.

Temperatures have dropped (~0F/-18C) so we strapped on the Hok skis for a bit of exploration at Afton State Park.

Tested the Hok skis on the maintenance road that descends from the backpacking campground: about the limit of control for even these slow skis, but still not fast enough for the !

Then it was a bit of a climb back up to the prairie above via the narrow trail pictured here. (No need to herringbone the steep bits, unlike the X-C skiers!)

Another quick bit of with Zeena and Tonttu at Fort Snelling State Park. This time we went up the steady grade from riverside under the fort up to the top of the bluff by the dog park. Then back down.

Good steady pace overall, with the occasional break for Very Important Smells, and especially one squirrel that ran excitingly down the trail ahead of us before climbing a tree and bringing the chase to an abrupt halt.

Time for a bit more cardio! Shuffling along on the Hok skis has been fun, but I wanted to take the younger Tonttu & Zeena out for a faster session & get everyone some good exercise.

Conditions at Fort Snelling were decent: groomed multi-purpose around the lake was pretty well packed, & walking trail on Pike Island was mostly trampled flat. The powerline was actually better than usual, with well-used snowshoe tracks just the right width for skiing.

Today's adventure: Hok on Rattlesnake Bluff at Frontenac State Park, south of Red Wing, MN, on the bluffs overlooking Lake Pepin on the Mississippi River.

Low clouds and just-below-freezing temps resulted in a beautiful layer of frost over everything, with details often too fine to appreciate in photos.

THIS is the kind of skiing that the Hok skis were meant for!
