The skill shortage is here to stay as it is baked into the demographic pie 🥧. The big Baby Boomer cohort is retiring in the coming decade and they leave a big gap in the workforce that the small Gen Z cohort can’t fill (even with the help of migration). In this column I’m showing which jobs are losing most workers as they approach the retirement cliff like lemmings (farmers and drivers). I described in the past that the skills shortage will persist for an uncomfortably long time. The shortage is essentially universal but in some professions the shortage worries me more than in others. The fact that we are running out of teachers is terrible and has terrible downstream consequences in our knowledge economy.
