Sounding like the Rolling Stones tipping off a hay wagon after crashing into the Pixies, Pavement channelled Steven Malkmus’s pitch-challenged voice and the band’s semi-competence into an era-defining album much smarter than its faux-naivete tried to suggest. Velvety chaos vies with off-kilter rootsy charm, and “In the Mouth of a Desert” and “Here” show what a great writer Malkmus is.
