Gladstone Scion to Apologise for Slavery: Can Indian Upper Castes Too Look Within?

That Western capitalism had its first roots in the expropriation of slave labour is of course by now an established fact of history. Mr Gladstone’s conscientious lead is admirable, one that many others could emulate – even in the former colonies. Badri Raina writes.

Dutch King Willem-Alexander has made a formal apology for the Netherlands’ 250-year-long involvement in the slave trade and the way it massively profited from it.

“On this day that we remember the Dutch history of slavery, I ask forgiveness for this crime against humanity.” He admitted, though, that racial discrimination continues to plague the country, so he expects some people to disagree with the apology.

Dutch king may apologise for slavery, but what comes next?

King Willem-Alexander is expected to make a formal apology to mark 160 years since the Netherlands abolished slavery.

This could nudge European leaders closer to reparations, but experts aren’t holding their breath.

In light of King Charles today giving support for an independent study into the involvement(!!) of the British in the , some relevant show & tell

Based on an original design for Wedgwood (a prominent abolitionist) from 1787, this token was made for the Society for Effecting the Abolition of the Slave Trade in 1794. It became an image widely repeated elsewhere. Despite the Abolition Act in 1807, the slave trade was not officially abolished in Britain until 1834

Today in Labor History March 22, 1794: President Washington signed the Slave Trade Act, which banned U.S. ships and citizens from engaging in the international slave trade. However, Americans continued to import and export slaves illegally, and other countries could still legally import slaves into the U.S. until 1807. A slave trader named John Brown, founder of Brown University, was the first person tried and acquitted under the Slave Trade Act. But the government still confiscated his ship. He was later elected to Congress.

Today in Labor History March 2, 1807: Congress abolished the African slave trade. The first American slave ship, Desire, sailed from Marblehead, Massachusetts, in 1637. After that, nearly 15 million Africans were transported as slaves to America. Overall, the African continent lost 50 million people to slavery and the deaths associated with it. Another 250,000 slaves continued to be illegally imported into the U.S. up until the Civil War.

The quote "his family had ties to the " sounds like a tenuous link, tbh.

The question should be did he actually benefit from those ties? Many have ties to all sorts of unsavoury stuff, and that honestly means nothing to us; definately not a sign of endorsement or of benefit. In fact, in many ways it is a hindrance.

Where can we learn more about this one?
