Just as an introductory post, here are a few interesting slide rules from my collection... #sliderule #sliderules
I lived through that time in the 1970s when the world sprang from 400yo #SlideRules to pocket #ElectronicCalculators. Within a decade thereafter, I noticed among the college students a palpable decline in mental arithmetic and visual acuity with mathematical functions like \( log, ln, sin, cos, tan, \) etc.
Today, high schoolers, college students, and businessmen alike are using #ChatGPT to compose written works. I anticipate people will soon no longer be able to write anything other than \( \texttt{LOL}, \texttt{ROFL}, \) and the like. By then, that cherished phrase of the past, \( \texttt{RTFM}\), will become meaningless.
#chatgpt #electroniccalculators #sliderules
This was how it went down, when I tried to chat up with #ChatGPT about log-log duplex and log-log vector #SlideRules. It kept up a good fib, but it soon crapped out.
Decided to organize the slide rules by manufacturer, because my office isnโt messy enough as is.
Sterling metric converter, still sealed. (Although I don't care much about such things. I will open it.) 12" versions are fairly common, but this is the first 6" one I've come across.
Latest acquisition is ThinkGeek's fairly recent take on a pastiche of Pickett slide rules.
@amoroso
I still have my long and short Picket #sliderules . If my granddhild gets curious some day I'll enjoy enlightening her about the way it was.
As a 21st Century computer scientist and electrical engineer, I revere #SlideRules as a simple means of showing due respect to my predecessors through the centuries.
@eddmora I love slide rules! My Faber-Castell 62/83N is my favourite. Not my site, but lots here to check out: https://www.sphere.bc.ca/test/sliderule.html
Oops, fixed the link!
And done.
Not factory fresh but good enough to be used.
One has a loose cursor, the other is now missing one and needs gluing.
Now that's a new one.
The screw broke. ๐ค
Things tou find when cleaning #SlideRules.
Sometimes those connections fail. Pretty normal when things are several decades old and rely on glue instead of proper hardware.
I'll finish cleaning and put this to the back. Need to find my PVC glue first.
Now that my major (or whatever) has somewhat returned I put this on the list.
They've been sitting in a box for way too long.
This is the basis for a class kit of #Aristo Studio #SlideRules that I collected over the last years. They need cleaning (the cases are already soaking), minor repairs, and probably adjustment for the cursors.
Side note: They are from different revisions. Colours differ, and the cursor design went from metal to plastic in different shapes.
Today I learned about introductory posts here. So I'll add this in.
I'm an electrical engineer with a focus on transmission and distribution (#T&D). Working there as a project manager, #QA engineer, commissioning supervisor, and soon #OHS specialist.
In my spare time I tinker with 8-bit computers, vintage #scopes and #meters, and general #electronics. Also collecting electronic #calculators and #SlideRules.

back at it but with CUBES and CUBE ROOTS this time

please enjoy
I wrote this article on #SlideRules, some months ago. I'm sharing it here as my first post, because it says a lot about me.

Here is my obligatory #introduction.
Iโve worked in the fields of #science and #engineering for over two decades. My degrees are in mechanical engineering, but Iโve spent many years both professionally and recreationally crossing over into the computer science realm when it intersects with my interests and projects.
Iโve been a #Linux user since the mid-90s, and Iโve been paid to admin Linux and Unix number-crunching boxes, including Irix, HP-UX, AIX, and other fun OSes that either donโt exist anymore or you probably havenโt heard of.
I enjoy programming, especially #Python, #Golang, and #Julia, although Iโve used another dozen or so languages along the way, everything from FORTRAN to Perl and TCL to Haskell (and lots in between). Iโm an electronic hobbyist, and you may find me tinkering with #RaspberryPi and #Arduino boards.
My technical interests also include #woodscience, #mathematics, #numbertheory/#numericalmethods, #statistics, #datascience, #sliderules, and #TeX.
I like making things, so my hobbies include #watercolor, #drawing, #woodworking and #blacksmithing. I also love #books and reading, with a proclivity towards #history, #art, #religion, #BiblicalCriticism, #scifi, #fantasy, and classical #literature.
I like to listen to and play #music. I play #guitar and dabble in lots of other instruments. My favorite styles of music are #folk, #celtic, and #Americana, but I enjoy a diverse mix of genres, so you might catch me listening to Cat Stevens and Tom Lehrer one day and Johnny Cash and Eminem the next.
I love #nature, mountains and oceans, #hiking, and #birding. I like to #travel to new places, see new things, and experience the local food and culture. Speaking of #food, I like to #cook.
I also like gaming, especially on my #Nintendo #Switch and #Steamdeck.

You say "nerd" like it's a bad thing.
In 1986, it hurt me.
In 2022, it pays me... and it pays very well indeed.
Lifelong, loud, and proud N E R D!
