The new #Slimbook laptop set-up adventure continues!

This time the main goal was to set up system roll-back using Btrfs for when (inevitably) I mess up the install.

TL;DR:
• update your firmware
• #Btrfs + #Baloo = problem (& workaround)
• Btrfs snapshots – for system roll-back (& backups)
• tried #Vulkan & #Wayland
• some small cool tools I use

OK, it’s 4 AM – such a typical time to end an install :blobmelt:

But it is done …well, the basic install at least of my #EndeavourOS on #Slimbook (on #Btrfs in #LUKS).

I have to say, this was surprisingly painless, thanks to the #Calamares installer.

TL;DR:

• password-protect your BIOS!
• Btrfs + LUKS was super easy
• using GNU #GRUB now, might change to #rEFInd later
• DPS is a thing I need to read more about

Day two with my new laptop #slimbook – time for some first impressions.

Apart from the hardware, I also took the opportunity to check out #GNOME on #Wayland, some games, as well as Slimbook’s own apps.

@muiiio @frameworkcomputer I've replaced my working x1 carbon gen9 by #slimbook prox some time ago. They are rebranded #tuxedo afaik

But I, surprisingly, didn't think of framework laptops.. 🤔

Are they balanced from price/quality/power perspective?

3 weeks on a new #slimbook

So good so far!

My Philips 272B7QU does provide 60W, so from time to time on a peak power it does lose the power supply. It looks like I need more powerful docking monitor

Super excited for my new #laptop to arrive!

It will be a first new one in over a decade and a first non-ThinkPad since almost forever (not counting my employer-issued Dell).

It's a #Slimbook ProX 14 with a custom engraving. Thanks to @slimbook for being super patient and cooperative!

I have some pretty crazy plans with it and will turn it into a blog series … mostly so I remember what I did, when things likely go wrong :blobmelt:

Ayer estuve trasteando con mi nuevo #slimbook y todo parece estar bien. Con casi cincuenta años doy comienzo a mi nueva vida post Microsoft. El siguiente hito es reducir la Google dependencia. También me gustaría acabar de cortar con Meta, pero no me siento capaz de prescindir del WhatsApp.

Und wirkliche Alternativen sind aktuell nur #Framework und #Slimbook.

Il est totalement exclu que j’achète du Windows pré-installé. J’avais repéré des portables intéressants avec l’OS de ton choix chez #Slimbook, des Espagnols, mais j’ai réfléchi au fait que j’ai un clavier #BÉPO et un bon écran externe et que JE NE SORS JAMAIS ma machine en production.

Du coup, je m’oriente plutôt vers un #NUC chez #LDLC.

En plus, LDLC, ils ont la semaine de 4 jours : faut soutenir les boites qui traitent bien leurs salariés.

Fedora is a distro that really should come preinstalled on consumer devices. So that you don't have to use their installer...
