Here's Thomas Mario, Playboy Magazine's food and drink editor, fucking up the basics of sloe gin in 1954.

Sloe gin is made by macerating already distilled gin with sloe berries and adding sugar (or syrup).

If you distilled the gin with the sloes as Mario describes you'd lose all the colour and some of the flavour.

Sloe gin has nothing to do with speed - sloes are the drupe of the blackthorn plant.

Highbury Sloe Gin 2022 (sloes from the field at the back of Stuart’s childhood home in Grays, infused 2022, bottled 2023). Yum!

Sloe picking on my last day off work yesterday very late, or bery early.. This is the best spot near me.
Are the banks of chalk streams known for sloes? This is Beverly Brook, I have seen stands of blackthorn by the Hogsmill and in Chalfont St Peter by the Misbourne where we picked sloes and visited my nan years ago.

Shaking the sloe gin jar with the lid off is my sign to stop doing things.

In Irish folklore, sloes are guarded by spiky fairy-folk known as the Lunantisidhe. Could they have made their way to Tasmania with the trees? We keep an eye out just in case when picking sloes for this classic gin.

Annette’s tip for a refreshing cocktail. A classic Sloe Gin Fizz.
• 25ml Nonesuch Sloe Gin
• Australian Sparkling White Wine (or Champagne if you must).
Pour the Sloe Gin into a chilled champagne flute, top it up with the bubbly and garnish with a twist of lemon peel.

The annual testing of my vintages. 2017 is absolutely lush.

My technique is now to freeze the sloes before adding to gin but otherwise do nothing to them - no shaking, no crushing, no pricking and no sugar. Just let time do its thing.
