#Bales2023FilmChallenge August 19: #potatoes eaten on #NationalPotatoDay
Jeanne Dielman (#DelphineSeyrig) routinely prepares meals, cleans the house, mothers her teenage son (Jan Decorte), and sees clients in #ChantalAkerman's Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (1975). Until something breaks and her carefully nurtured practices slowly unravel. ☞ https://write.underworld.fr/settima/jeanne-dielman-23-quai-du-commerce-1080-bruxelles-1975

“The pain doesn’t make you want to live. How many lives I have? Nine!”
Wang Bing's "Til madness do us part" (2013) is an exceptional document on China's mental asylums, and the sometimes arbitrary reasons for people's detention. It's not an easy watch but essential.

A new Apichatpong Weerasethakul! Albeit only a short film...
"There are demonstrations in Bangkok but the insects on the white bed linen have other concerns, if they have any at all. In his short film hovering on the border between dream and wakefulness Apichatpong Weerasethakul again blends familiar banality with the realm of the dead."

The Cannes Film Festival has added a new short film by Portuguese director Pedro Costa (Horse Money) to its line-up: Filles du Feu.
That makes it 3 big Slow Cinema names for Cannes: besides Costa, there will also be two new films by Wang Bing and the latest by Lisandro Alonso.

Still hoping to turn this into a book one day. I started a year or so ago, but I lost heart because I saw that a substantial part has already been appropriated by academics without referencing my work. I need to find a new, original approach now 🙄

More info on one of the two new Wang Bing films: Man in Black (2023), to be screened in Cannes.
"The 60-minute film, which will debut as a special screening, is a portrait of 86-year-old Wang Xilin, one of China’s most important modern classical composers and is now lives in exile in Germany."

"The Metamorphosis begins as a visual poem, but with every single ray it becomes clear that this poem is a personal and intimate rumination of the loss of one’s centre."
"The Metamorphosis of Birds" by Catarina Vasconcelos was one of the best films I saw in 2022. Just beautiful, poetic, and thought-provoking.

The Walker Arts Center shows Tsai Ming-liang's superb "Goodbye Dragon Inn" (2003) on April, 20. Even better than this is the fact that Apichatpong Weerasethakul introduces the film!

Tsai Ming-liang's "Stray Dogs" (2013) was the only one by the director which I had the pleasure to see on a big screen. It was in Edinburgh, and throughout the film I had the feeling that something was coming to an end. Even though Tsai returned to filmmaking with "Days", "Stray Dogs" had a sense of an ending to it, which is still with me today, 10 years later.

Bi Gan's "Long Day's Journey into Night" (2018) is a hypnotic journey through time, space and one's soul, or is it the soul of the characters? Of Bi Gan? The director's oeuvre tells so much more than a story. His feature films appeal to the unconscious.
If you feel like reading more, I wrote a few words on my blog: https://theartsofslowcinema.com/2020/08/17/long-days-journey-into-night-bi-gan-2018/

Films by Thai director Apichatpong Weerasethakul are more than just films. They're journeys, journeys through the mind, through the soul. For me, each film reminds me of shamanic journeys I took in the past and I wrote about it.
