All garlic beds are harvested. One of them is now weeded, straightened, and seeded with buckwheat. Seven more to go. #agroecology #smallfarm #marketgarden #garlic #buckwheat #covercrops

Iโve failed to get a photo of Martha, our one white sheep who is like a grandmother, with our smallest chickens sitting on her back. Whenever I approach, they all jump up. But, I have got a still from the camera. This is what they like to do a lot. A sheep must be a lovely soft resting place. #sheep #animals #SmallFarm
โWe simply pay too much to the wrong people, to grow the wrong foods the wrong way, in the wrong places.โ

Monthly(ish) clean of field (spring/summer/early autumn quarters) chicken house this morning. And itโs been raining all night and still raining today. So, the sheep were in the field shelter and very interested in my activity. I will introduce them in the alt text of the photos. #sheep #animals #SmallFarm

All our products are made from hemp grown right here on the farm and made by yours truly.
We fall for it every year. After the long, cold winter, we get one day of sun, the daffodil blooms start to open, and our brains go into springtime overdrive.
And then the next day itโs cold again. Itโs not spring. Itโs wrong spring. Itโs SPRONG.
It happened again this week here in the #PNW. We know real spring will be here soon, but until then, letโs celebrate wrong spring with 20% all Tinctures and Topicals โ just enter code SPRONG at checkout.
Did you know Bactrian camels (c. dromedarius) are all domesticated? They are also called the Mongolian camel. (There are feral ones of a different genus that are almost extinct) This cutie-pie lives in southern BC. So fluffy! Photo by Sherry Brown.

It's a hard balance between getting rid of fossil fuel powered machinery and vehicles and buying *new stuff that is electric, mostly plastic encased and is made in countries a long way from here. The first thing to think about is using LESS energy all around and buy less stuff. I did get an electric mower a while back because letting the yard get tall and dry in these fire summers is a bad idea. But, I am also constantly finding ways of using up that space to grow food. I have no native top soil, just rocky grit so I build raised beds everywhere. One area in my yard has a whole bunch of clay type soil that a neighbour was getting rid of many years ago. It became a base for building fertile soil but it's the only spot that has any. That doesn't mean the weeds don't grow in the rest, they grow everywhere. Couch grass is the main culprit. Some weeds are useful medicinals and pollinators: dandelions, plantain, and mullein. There is a bad patch of invasives: blackberries, tansy and mint. I pick as many berries as I can, pick and dry the mint for tea, and dry the tansy to use in the bee smoker. But there is still far too much. Chopping it back (with a machete) every year before it goes to seed seems to help it from spreading. I'm constantly searching for new ways to use less engine powered machinery and more hand powered tools. And keeping the peace and the silence.
